Massage is a very effective way to relieve stress and tension. Massage encourages circulation and eases minor aches and pains. It enables the essential oils to be absorbed and used by the skin and body. You do not have to have a full body massage to benefit; you can rub the blended oils locally into the area giving
problems. Choose from one of our carrier oils to blend with your essential oils, and massage over the area giving problems, whether it be muscular aches and pains, a stiff neck or a bronchitic chest. In massaging the abdomen, move your hand clockwise in circles, following the flow of the intestines; among other benefits, this helps to relieve constipation.
Making Up Massage Oils- Choose a vegetable bases carrier oil, The aroma will be taken up over a period of time, so the oil will smell more rounded after a week than just after it has been mixed
Bathing with essential oils is a pleasant way to relax, a bath helps to keep body and soul together. Today's fast pace living often allows a little time for more than a quick shower. A bath has become a well-kept secret, but it is one of the most wonderful ways to use aromatherapy. You can create your own personal bath oil, free from dyes, synthetics, and artificial fragrances. Or you might create such a bath to pamper someone special. Since essential oils do not mix well with water, most store-bought preparations are made with synthetic emulsifiers. But now you will be able to prepare your bath oil with natural emulsifiers that's so very good for your skin. Here are a few baths you can take- for your body and soul.
Honey Bath- Honey is a very nourishing for skin and has good anti-inflammatory properties. Essential oils dissolve easily in honey.. Mix 3-5 drops of essential oil in 3-4 tablespoons of honey, and pour the mixture into the bathtub-either before or after running the bath water. Cream Bath- Cream, a natural emulsifier, will prevent dry skin. Mix 10-15 drops of essential oil in 3-4 tablespoons of sweet cream. (egg yolk is a good substitute for cream).
Bubble Bath- Mix essential oil in liquid soap with a "skin-friendly" pH level and without a fragrance of its own. Use 4-5 tablespoons of soap for every 1-15 droops of essential oil. Adding a strong tea-like hibiscus for blue or hollyhock for pink will give your bath oil a mixture a pretty color. In a pretty flask or bottle this bubble bath makes a wonderful gift.
Sea Salt- Sea salt added to bath water helps remove toxic substance from your body. It cleanses the whole system. Minerals contained in sea salt help strengthen the immune system. Add the sea salt (available in health food stores) to a container with a lid and add 5-10 drops of essential oil Close the lid and shake the container vigorously. Pour the mixture into the tub and add water. Stir bathwater will to allow the salt to dissolve.
Foot Bath - prepare a foot bath in a large bowl or in a foot spa. Cold water will stimulate circulation and be refreshing on a hot summer day when you feel heavy and tired, but don't feel heavy and tired, but don't use cold water if your feet are already cold. A hot foot bath helps relax the whole body and helps soothe women with gynecological problems. Add 6-10 drops of essential oil to each bath.
Hot compresses are relaxing. In addition, they open the pores of the skin so that essential oils can penetrate faster and deeper. They also ease cramps and tension. Add 4-6 drops of essential oil to a bowl of hot water. Briefly immerse a small towel in the water, squeeze out the excess water, and apply to the part of the body to be treated. Remove the compress when it cools down. Do not use compresses if you have any broken skin or blood vessels.
Hair and Face Oil
Some oils are particularly good for the skin and hair. Use proportions of one drop of essential oil to 10ml (2tablespoons) of carrier oil (preferable pre-blended for the purpose) for a pre-bath facial oil or as an after bath body lotion and moisturizer.
For conditioning, massage the blended oils into the scalp and leave for 15-30 minutes before shampooing.
Uses as room fragrance, essential oils create a pleasant atmosphere; at the same time, specific oils will have an effect on your mood, creating a good ambiance for meditation, work, relaxation, romance or sleep. Some will also help to fumigate the air in cases of infectious illness.
Add a few drops of essential oil to a bowl of dried flowers or potpourri.
Add a few drops to drawer liners and padded clothes hangers
Put a couple of drops on a light ring
Most oils can be used for room fragrance. Some are particularly suitable for special purposes.
Meditation- Cedarwood and sandalwood
Antiviral- Mint (alone), tea tree (alone), Eucalyptus, and Rosemary
Romance- Ylang-Ylang, geranium, sandalwood
Relaxation/Sleep- Chamomile, Lavender, Sandalwood, Ylang-Ylang
Dosages When Using Essential Oils
Many of the recipes found in AROMATHERAPY books are in metric - the USA is not completely on that system, so the following is a conversion guideline:
1/2 ounce = 15 cc = 15 ml = 1 Tablespoon
1 ounce = 30 cc = 30 ml = 2 Tablespoons
A 2.5% dilution is recommended for adults - 1% for children under 12. To determine this dilution in drops, figure out how many ml (or cc) are in the bottle you are using, then divide that number by 2. Example:
You have a 1 ounce bottle of carrier oil that you are going to use for your blend.
1 ounce = 30 ml
1/2 = 15ml
Therefore, a 2.5% blend for a 1 ounce bottle is 15 drops of essential oil. You can add 15 drops to 1 ounce of whatever carrier oil you are using.
A 1/2-ounce bottle is a perfect size for a bath blend. Pour your carrier oil into the bottle first, then add 2 or more essential oils using up to 7 or 8 drops total. Pour this into your tub, relax and enjoy your Aromatherapy experience. Add soft music and candlelight to enhance the effect.
Blending Checklist for the Skin
- First, establish the use of your blend. Uplifting, relaxing, stimulating, meditation, anti-inflammatory, pain relief, skin care, anti-spasmodic, insect repellent...
- Your selection of oils needs to be appropriate for what you are creating and have a scent you find pleasant.
- Keep other aromas at a distance when you are blending - not a good idea to be cooking dinner when you are blending.
- Focus is important when blending, so avoid blending when you are anxious or tired - especially if the blend is for someone else.
- Build your blend using just 2 - 4 oils in the beginning, one drop at a time. You will be amazed by the power of just one drop, and how it can totally change your blend.
- Work slowly and keep good records for future reference.
- If you are uncertain which direction you are going with a blend, sometimes leaving it alone and returning after a bit makes a difference.
- Because we each have our own unique chemistry, essential oils, like perfumes, smell different in their bottle or on another person than they will on your skin. As you are mixing, take a drop of your blend and apply to your own skin and 'smell the difference.'
- Be aware of synthetics - remember, they have absolutely no therapeutic value and many of us are allergic to them.
- Jojoba is a carrier oil that never goes rancid.
- Use only cold pressed oils to blend.
- Avoid mineral oils or products that contain mineral oil, because their molecular size is too large t allow the essential oils to penetrate the skin.
- Lotions, creams, shampoos, body washes and rinses may be used as carriers for your oils. Be aware, however, of the ingredients in these products. For example, do not use a lotion with mineral oil for an essential oil carrier.
BLENDING ESSENTIAL OILS
(Minimum-Maximum Measurement of drops of Essential Oil into Base Oil)
0 - 1 drop into 1/5 teaspoon base oil
2 - 5 drops into 1 teaspoon base oil
4 - 10 drops into 2 teaspoons base oil
6 - 15 drops into 1 tablespoon base oil
8 - 20 drops into 4 teaspoons base oil
10 - 15 drops into 5 teaspoons base oil
12 - 30 drops into 2 tablespoons base oil
20 - 25 drops = 1milliliters of Oil (ml)
100 drops = 5ml
300 - 312 drops = 15 ml = 1/2 ounce
600 - 625 drops = 30 ml = 1 ounce
Droppers come in various sizes with various sizr openings. A drop is exactly the same amount of liquid no matter what size the dropper, but essential oils are both very thick and heavyweight and very thin and lightweight (like patchouli weights more in less space the Lavender) But in general:
1 dropper holds 20 drops which is 1 ml.
1/2 dropper yields 10 drops which is 0.5 ml
Remember that USA measures and British measures differ some.
The standard dilution for an aromatherapy blend is 2.5%, which is equivalent to 15 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce of carrier oil (Almond, Avocado, Evening Primrose, Canola Oils, Jojoba oil.).
A medicinal dilution is 5%, which is equal to 30 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce of carrier oil. For example, this blend would be to treat acute muscle aches and pains, arthritis, and migraines.
Remember with essential oils, less is better!
