Since the Zika virus appeared it's even more crucial to use natural protection rather than giving yourselves cancer from the DEET chemicals found in typical bug sprays. Yes we all know and agree toxic chemicals kill mosquitoes... but they also put your health and the health of your family in danger. Spraying deadly chemicals on your skin when you are going outdoors likely to encounter heat which in turn opens your pores is a horrible idea.

Mosquitoes are considered one of the most dangerous creatures on the planet because of their ability to spread deadly diseases. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control report that the insects kill over one million people a year just through the transmission of malaria. dengue fever, yellow fever and West Nile virus to name a few.

  • Mosquito bites produce swelling and redness in the area of the bite and can take days to subside
  • Bug and mosquito bites can be fatal if you are allergic to them
  • Mosquitoes also transmit malaria, dengue fever and chikungunya just to name a few.

The Zika virus has caused mass panic in Latin America and has now spread all over the world, and now it's right here in our back yard, Miami has been found to be one of the areas identified with a high rate of infection. Protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites with a natural insect repellent

Essential Oils for the Summer Months

With the warm weather means there are also many critters that are waiting to take advantage of the season and your skin. Essential Oils for the summer months are a must in order to survive. We live in Florida and our mosquito population is huge and they are here all year, but during the spring and summer months when they come out, they come out in full force. Nothing ruins a gathering, stroll, or swim like a swarm of unwanted mosquitos.

As we are all too familiar with the modern toxic bug repellents that are loaded with a wide range of petrochemicals like aldehydes, benzene derivatives, DEET other substances that are harmful to us and the environment I decided that for my family I would make a natural alternative to keep the bugs and critters away. Making your own bug spray is easy when you know what oils to use for what critters, different oils can be more effective against different types of bugs follow the list below as a guide to assist you in making your bug spray. I also have one that I sell on my website and you can find that in my Essential Blends Page.

Here are a few ideas on how you can use your Essential Oils to keep the bugs away.

  • Sprays – Combining essential oil with a carrier oil like grapeseed or coconut oil, diluting it with distilled water. Add this in a small spray bottle and used on exposed skin areas.
  • Cotton ball – add a couple drops essential oil on a cotton ball , place the cotton in the corners of your home in area where you suspect the bugs are entering (make sure your cotton balls are out of reach of children and pets).
  • Hanging ropes – This is one of my favorites for outdoors, take a rope and apply a few drops of essential oils. Hang the rope around the area outdoors you will be if you have a slight breeze then it’s really fantastic because it will spread the oil throughout the space.

Recipes to get you started

Bug Be Gone Mosquito Repellent SprayBug Spray: Fill 8oz spray bottle half way with distilled water, add 2oz of either grapeseed or coconut oil. You can also use witch hazel if you don’t want to use an oil. Add 50-60 drops of the essential oil you are going to use and you are ready to spray away. If you want a stronger solution you can add more Essential Oils to the mix. I personally don’t use coconut oil because mosquitos are draw to sweet smells making me stay away from coconut for this recipe. Good Essential Oils to use are Citronella, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus and Lavender.

Lotion Repellant:

Fill a 2oz bottle with an unscented lotion you may have on hand, and add 5 or 6 drops of lemongrass oil. Another very simple way to make your own lotion repellent is to use a lavender lotion you may have on hand and just add 5-6 drops of Lemongrass and Citronella Essential Oil. Apply lotion to exposed areas when going outdoors.
